How Do Pin Cylinders Work

by Derek Mercer - 19:32 on 13 March 2026

Ever wondered how pin cylinder locks actually work ? These types of locks account for over 70 per cent of all the door locks in the UK. Its a very simple but effective way of securing a door. In basic terms your key pushes sets of pins to a level called the shear line which allows the lock core to turn. When the wrong key is inserted or a badly cut key then the pins do not go down fully to the shear line which means some pins block the core from turning its simple isnt it.

If you have a problem lock in St Helens or surrounding areas then we can help, call 07967 778940 and speak with Derek or Pam.
